cheers guys. just a small update on the topic.

Yesterday i coped a pair of those "best of Levis" Selvedge 501's and they do fit larger than expected. so much that i had to downsize. i plan to shrink them dressed on to avoid ultra shrinkage in the waist especially.

meanwhile, i will will display my previous pair of stf's slightly over one year:

lighting in the photo is way off and not showing anywhere how cool these jeans are looking right now! fade wise, since the fit is crappy because i followed instructions to size up!

Dave, I totally agree about Levi´s 501 is not the most trendy jeans in the world, but for real denimlovers it´s a must to have at least one 501 (or better 2 when they are in need of washing).
I am very very dedicated to this mother of all jeans and after many years of wearing Diesel, Replay, G-Star I have turned back to the roots forever: daily 501 wear (now LVC 501 model 1966 rigid STF, 4 months unwashed, part of a denim-wear-out project together with Rotterdam Museum in the Netherlands), and sometimes change with the other original brands: Lee 101z and Wrangler, the Big American 3.
And I will never get rid of a 501. When they are falling apart, I patch them over and over and over and over again. Some of mine are more patch than 501!

Help! I'm about to order my first 501 STF's and I want them to not be baggy in the seat area. I tried on preshrunk 501s and a 36x34 fits pretty nice and snug. Should I order a 36 waist or size up to a 38? I plan on soaking them, wearing for several days, but will need to wash them periodically.
    Please help!

I'm 6'2' and wore the original 501's 34x34. My size equivalent in STF is 33x38. Any numbered waist size after months/years of wear will stretch 1 size. Hence size down one in waist or go true to size for a more relaxed feel. Never size up in waist! The inseam is where the shrinkage is most pronounced. I have to imagine if you say you're wearing a 34 inseam in the normal 501's you can't be too far removed from me in height. I say get 35x38. I do the whole wearing in the bathtub to shrink thing too. First real washing machine wash at about 3 years with dozens of ocean swims scattered in between as well. BOOM, done!

Height-size worn in normal 501's-equivalent STF size. Bear witness to the best sizing info on the web for STF's.........ever

I would second the previous post.

My experience of standard STF is that the waist shrinks an inch the first time the jeans are washed/soaked ...BUT this is a temporary phenomenon. Once you wear them, it won't be long at all before you are at the as-new size again, and then the jeans will stretch even further as with all denim. Obviously the length stays shrunk!

My last pre-washed 501 was W29, which was fine if I didn't wash them too often, else they got slightly tight on the waist. W30 STF ended up being like wearing a bag that just about stays up if I don't try to run, so I went for W28 next time, they stretched out okay.

The old Levi 'size up 1" on the waist' advice is -------s.

Anyone want to do a 501STF contest for 2016? I'll keep an eye on this thread for the next couple of months. I also asked the question at superfuture, as Dom (my name).

Ah, that was you on Superfuture! Sorry, I'm out. I have two pairs of 501s, both worn for just over 6 months, so even if they only last another 3 months each, that's half the year gone, also a pair of Grim Tims I have only worn for 12 days and want to get some wear in. Have fun though, I will look forward to watching the contest from this end - it seems a while has passed since the last one.

Won't be in the market to start a new pair of stf's for a long long time I'm afraid.

Actually just got a new pair but 33x36. Changed my mind about the 38inseam thought. 36inseam is more appropriate I say now. While soaking a coin pocket rivet popped out. Waiting for these to arrive:
